Follow Interesting Routes &
Listen To Walking Tours

We’ve developed a series of interesting walking tours of downtown Tampa, Bayshore and Hyde Park. Beginning Oct. 1, you’ll be able to pick from a variety of different routes, each between 1-1/2 and 2 miles in length, and learn more about the city in which you live. Here’s the tools that will make it fun and easy.

Printed Walking Maps

Traditional folded maps outlining six routes will be available at downtown hotel and office buildings concierge desks, as well your local YMCAs.

The routes include photos and brief information about the sites you’ll see along your way.

Podcasts With Customized Stories and Local Music

Beginning Oct. 1, Podcasts can be downloaded to your MP3 player or i-pod that will provide intimate narration for your chosen route with fascinating facts and motivational music. For those of you who haven’t tried podcasts yet, the process is very easy. You just click on what you want and it transfers right to your computer, which you can then put on your listening device. The process is free and safe.

Because everyone is at a different fitness level, and everyone has different music taste, Healthy Together has recruited local area bands to provide the tunes. You can pick your favorite to accompany each walk. Salsa, jazz, country, classical and rock music back narrations from well-known area personalities.

As if getting fit and dumping stress isn’t enough to motivate you to get out for a few minutes and walk everyday, you can also log on to the new Do The Local Motion website and keep a diary of when and how far you walk. As you count those miles, we do too - and you can win all kinds of cool prizes like backpacks and shoes for your efforts. The best part – every exercise mile counts, whether you walk with us, or with some other community group, or even by yourself.

WALKING IS FOR EVERYONE:

“We made downtown Tampa our pilot project,” says Sid Morgan, Healthy Together’s co-chair and Humana market president, “because workplace wellness is so important to a vibrant city. But come 2009, we hope to work with neighborhood associations all over the Tampa Bay region to develop routes and podcasts for their community walks.”

It’s taking the combined effort of a lot of local companies and organizations to create this program. To mention a few, the Tampa Downtown Partnership has rallied local business participation, the Hillsborough County Health Department has provided support through its STEPS program, the downtown YMCA is letting walkers use their shower facilities and both the Y and Tampa General Hospital offer health assessments for participants. A significant contribution comes from the very talented Tampa Digital Studios team who are organizing the music and building the website.
